Somewhere Beyond the Sea: Why Mermaids Don’t Skip Leg Day

Posted on June 21 2016

The story behind our iconic Mermaids Don't Skip Leg Day by Malia Warren, Owner of Lifting the Dream

Do you ever get a genius idea and just want to shout it from the rooftops?!

No lie. The first EVER post from our IG account and with our first (legit) design.

That's pretty much how I came up the "Mermaids Don't Skip Leg Day" saying.

It was so good, I had to put it on a tee shirt.

I remember the day that I came up with it.

It was a couple weeks after we first opened the Etsy shop in May 2015.

I love mermaids, because of an obvious Mermaid presence in my Disney life growing up. I wanted to find a way to make a fun workout top that represented the deep sea princess. I was brainstorming, as usual with my husband (pretty much me bouncing ideas off of him haha) and there it was.

Mermaids. Don't. Skip. Leg. Day.

Ok it was more like an excited shout:

He actually looked at me funny. “Mermaids don’t have legs, Malia, I don’t get it”.

The nerve.

It could go either way, really. Do they not skip leg day because they don’t have legs? [My husbands', guess]

[my vote] Do they not skip leg day, because like Ariel, they really do have legs inside their tails and because they’re swimming all the time, they’re always moving their legs.

How can you ever skip leg day if you’re constantly working out your legs?

Anyway, most anyone who has ever exercised, or watched people exercise, or heard about people exercising, presumably from their friend or family member that exercises alot and therefore talks about it constantly (guilty!) has heard that Skipping Leg Day is a bad idea.

Squats, Deadlifts, Running, Leg Press, all of it. If it works your legs, it's considered part of Leg Day.

Since it's debut on our Etsy site in 2015, we've outfitted hundreds of mermaids for their Leg Day adventures! I couldn't be more proud of our original design! And while it's been copied numerous times, we're just going to keep on swimming and continue to keep the bubbly disposition knowing that our design has made thousands of people smile (or confused, like my husband, haha!).

There is a stronger meaning behind every LTD Design, a story, a dream. And it all started with this one design. This slogan was meant to inspire all Mermaids, land or sea, to get up, get out, and be active -- whatever that means to you.

Check out all of our Mermaids in Instagram! As you can see this tank design has evolved, and so have we.

We now release this design in limited quantities and are committed to changing the color scheme and style of tank every time.

Why, do you ask?

All of the designs with Lifting the Dream are limited release and allow us to create the sayings on other media, such as hats, hoodies and decals (which also inspired Sports Bras and More!). But besides this, like the true, unique Mermaid you are, it keeps you from looking like the next Mermaid in the gym. #amIright?

If you love all things Mermaid, check out our entire Collection dedicated to Mermaids because...

There are plenty of Fish in the Sea, but you're a Mermaid. Mermaid on Apple iOS 11.2

Malia is the owner, and mamapreneur, of Lifting the Dream. When she's not lifting heavy weights, she's doing some fun shit outdoors with her family or taste testing local ciders. She is a Cali girl born and raised, with salt water in her veins and sunshine in her heart. She and her family now reside near Denver, Colorado, soaking up the 300+ days of sunshine and breathtaking (literally, altitude) views.
