As we are all starting to feel the chill in the air as well as everyone starting to decorate for fall and Halloween, we are getting worried about our workout routine going down the drain.
I know all you want to do is put on comfy clothes, a good movie, and lay in bed but here are some tips to help you beat the cold weather slump. Hopefully, these tips will keep the heat going in your motivation while the weather is getting colder.
1. Mindset
We already know that your motivation to workout comes from having a solid mindset. We recommend keeping up that mindset throughout these cold months. Most of us in the U.S. have been able to get back to our workout routines inside the walls of a gym despite the pandemic. If you workout at home it can be a little more challenging but you can do it! Keep up the momentum - nothing is changing.
2. Set Goals and Make Plans
It has been proven time and time again that if you make goals and write them down you are far more likely to achieve them. So, let’s start that habit or make a commitment to continue it if you already do.
Start setting goals for your fitness journey by writing them down and scheduling workouts on your already busy calendar, if you don’t already do that. If you want some tips on how to do this, check out our article on the benefits of scheduling workouts.
I always say if it’s not in my planner then I’m not doing it. So put it in there and commit!
3. Join a Challenge
If you have never done a workout challenge before then this is a great time to start. There are literally challenges for every fitness level out there! We regularly hold fitness challenges using the GymRat app in our Facebook group, Lifting the Dream Community. Join us for a fun challenge based on points (minutes of working out = points) as a great way to stay motivated any time of the year!
You can also search for one on Instagram or Pinterest, write all the days down in your calendar and get to work!
4. Get a Partner
Find a buddy to hold you accountable either by going to work out with you. You could also ask them to call/text you to check in on whether you worked out when you said you would. It makes it so much harder to fail when we have someone else counting on us.
As an added bonus, you could ask a family member to be your buddy while you guys embark on a fitness journey together. Check out our friends at Get Real, sisters Reana and Alex Kaminsky, who set off on a fitness journey together and with each others' help and motivation lost over 100lbs. Together they are inspiring others to find their own Real through fitness.
5. Reward Yourself
Finally, the best motivator of all, REWARDS!
We all love to have that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, right? Make sure you are still doing things for yourself that make you happy. Rewards can be big or small, from watching a movie, having a nice glass of hot cocoa, or shopping for a new sports bra. Do the work, reap the reward.
Knowing that there is a reward coming for your hard work is a great motivator and can help you push through these tough times. If your rewards happen to be food just make sure to consume in moderation and not ruin all the hard work you did!
Whatever it is that motivates you to workout now just keep it going - don’t get discouraged by a little bit of cold weather. So, whether you use the tips we shared today or some of your own, just remember you got this and we are all in this together!
